I'm starting to feel like Helprin loves words so much that in his frenzy to write as many of them as possible he forgot the goal of writing a good story. I love words too, that's why the book is still bearable and kinda beautiful but, oh my, do we really need so many half-assed characters with abandoned storylines that each could have their own novel?

Admittedly, things might get resolved but right now it's a mess.
