I just finished Beowulf and for me he is the monster, not Grendel, not the dragon and definitely not Grendel's mother. He killed the last two characters basically because he could. Grendel's mother was just grieving her son (I would also seek revenge). I also had to get used to the writing style, even the modern English confuses me, I still do not know the whole story. And the speeches before battles seem impractical
