I'm beginning to have second thoughts about trying Ulysses. I think Joyce might be cryptic in a way that is literally inscrutable, at least without footnotes guiding you toward some labored conclusion. Not everything needs to be understood immediately or in a single pass, but it does need to at least leave you with the conviction that the effort is worthwhile
