It’s nice that you can press pause on a book and it will always wait for you. Books are so patient like that. They won’t hold grudges. Complete……indifference.

Let’s call this reading journey a summer “slow burn” lol. This books is packed with moments of chilling happiness to depressing realities of post war traumas. I sympathize with the furtive vices each POW lived with following the war. In many ways these people fought two wars: first in Japan and second upon returning home. What is sad is that very few survived more than a couple years fighting the second war.

The world of Japanese POW camps is so disturbing. The treatment of humans in these ways showcases the terrible amount of time that people have spent finding ways to exploit others for personal enjoyment, war information, or broadly to execute an political agenda. These stories make me think deeply about psychological manipulation and the effects of trauma on personal development. What a sad reality this time was.

Reading 12 pages at a time doesn’t let me get in the reading groove
