I'm a little confused re: timeframe. The back of the book says this is post-Civil War. Yet there is still slavery. A group of old men say they fought in the war, which leads me to think that the war was a long time ago.. yet these old men are runaway slaves. And then the next chapter has a YOUNG veteran in it. I'm confused.

Story is interesting, though.
