On being the spare, there’s a section that really struck me. “I was summoned to provide backup, distraction, diversion and, if necessary, a spare part. Kidney, perhaps. Blood transfusion. Speck of bone marrow.”

To be viewed as having value only in what you can give or do for another, instead being valued as a person. I wonder how his view of himself has changed over the years.
