Kuhn writes in the style of a 19th century novelist about a runaway thief and murderer taking refuge at a Transcendentalist community in eastern Connecticut. The blending of history with the fantastical and the grotesque is a lot of fun. Also, as a childhood reader of Louisa May Alcott and an teen and adult reader of the Transcendentalists, the story is a trip down Memory Lane. Kuhl is just plain cool!

Jackson Kuhl's novella, set in a transcendtalist farming community in mid-19th century Connecticut, contains elements of classic gothic horror, Connecticut geography, and the narrative style befitting its setting. A Season of Whispers explores what happens when greed undermines values and people can no longer hide, or run from, who they are.
