The music ended with a flourish, the lights went out, and we all applauded. Apart from Alex, who was watching with a cat-like stare.
The applause faded. In the silent darkness, the soprano’s silk dress swished.
Her well-trained voice screamed. “He’s dead, he’s dead – he’s really dead!”

‘The conker’ was a common sight in England in autumn. It was the rock-hard fruit of the horse chestnut tree and, traditionally, little boys drilled holes in the middle, then thwacked them together, smashing them to smithereens for fun.
“You do know why I’m giving you this, don’t you?” Alex asked.
“You want a conker fight?”
“No, my darling, Eldritch. It’s because… love conkers all...”
