A surprising part was when Brian sided with Sara instead of Anna. Throughout the book, Brian has taken Anna's side, but during the trial he sides with Sara, messing up Campbell's plan.¨If Brian will not support Anna's decision to stop being a donor, then the judge will find it far harder to rule in favor of emancipation.¨(346). This proves that it was surprising because Campbell didn't expect Brian to side with Sara.

A surprising part was Anna's death. After Anna wins the lawsuit and gains medical emancipation, she is hit by a car and dies. ¨ When the monitors flatline, I wait to see some change in her. And then I feel it, as her heart stops beating beneath my palm-that tiny loss of rhythm, that hollow calm,¨ (418). This was surprising because Anna is the central character in the book, and you would expect Kate to die, not her.

A trait describing Jesse is careless. When Jesse blows up an old shed, he does not realize that a homeless man lived there. "It occurs to me that the rat is most likely not a rodent, but another homeless guy. One using this shed as a shelter. 'Dan, are you saying that someone lives in there?" (246). This shows that he's careless because he doesn't look to see if there are people in a building before committing arson.

One uplifting part was when Brian allowed Anna to stay at the station. When Anna is given a restraining order against her mother, her father allows her to move into the fire station he works at. “Anna’s going to stay with me there for a few days. I think maybe she needs a little time by herself.” (196) This was uplifting because Brian knew how Anna was feeling and has been able to care for her the way Sara hasn’t.

A trait to describe Julia is nonchalant. When Julia is at school with Campbell, she is different from the other kids without a care. "She wore army boots and a Cheap Trick T-shirt under her school blazer; she was able to memorize entire sonnets without breaking a sweat." (120) This shows that she is nonchalant because she does things her own way and doesn't change just because the other students are very different.
