One shocking part was when Ms. Otterbourne was murdered. Poirot and Race were talking to her, and had finally gotten her to admit who she saw leaving Linnet Doyle's room before she "turned slowly sideways, as though in supreme inquiry, then her body slumped forward and she fell to the floor with a crash." (233). It seems as if every time they get close to the truth, they end up with more questions.

One key part was when Poirot couldn't figure out the true story. After Linnet died, many people were investigated. Interviewing Marie Van Schuyler and hearing that Miss Otterbourne dropped something off the boat but then hearing Otterbourne deny it was contradictory. After compiling information they wonder if they "are to accept Miss Van Schuyler's evidence or Rosalie's denial?" (188). Discovering the truth is tough.

One shocking part was when Linnet was found dead. Drunk, Jacqueline de Bellefort had killed her former partner, Simon who was married to Linnet. However, the gun could not be found. Later, the detective who has been hearing the commotion finds out that "'Linnet Doyle's dead-shot through the head last night.'" (136). This is surprising given that her husband was shot the night before. There must be a correlation.

One conflict was when Jacqueline says that Linnet "stole" Simon, her partner, with her money and charm. However, Linnet said Simon was already going to leave, and it wasn't her fault that she fell for him. When Simon is confronted by Poirot, the man who Linnet recruited, he claims he "won't have the whole thing visited on Linnet. She had nothing whatever to do with it." Regardless, Jacqueline is thirsty for revenge.
