In his intro, Ellis asked why there were so many good leaders of the American Revolution. His answer, in part, was that American society at that time was post-aristocracy and pre-democracy. The leaders who came to the fore did so primarily on their own merit without having to campaign.

Ellis was mentioned in an article I read over the weekend because his embellishment of his combat experience was similar to that of Brian Williams. He was suspended from his faculty chair for a year, but I found it fascinating that this is the time he used to write his book on George Washington. I think it was his best. Have you read it?

Yes. Interesting how crises like this tend to bring up past sins. His lies were even more bizarre than Williams' since in the latter's case he was at least in the battle zone. This is my first Ellis book, surprisingly, so I have not read his book on Washington. This is just getting to his section on the first president and the author is clearly enjoying the topic.
