In my relationship with Jesus, I'd gone from the great joy of feeling overwhelmed by his love to bitter resentment at feeling overwhelmed by his demands... My love had become a "have to," a "should" rather than a gift freely given.

it doesn't matter how much you read your Bible, do good works, go to church, serve others, or know about God. If you are not honest about your true feelings, you will be stunted in your spiritual growth with God and limited in your relationships.

I learned I was supposed to rejoice even if I was sad or angry. I certainly was not to share my fears since the Bible was filled with commands not to fear.
This superficial & incomplete understanding of Scripture's view of our humanity almost destroyed me. At least, it severely stunted my spiritual growth & ability to love well.

We were also joined at the hip in feeling responsible for each other's sadness, anger, and anxiety. As a result, we lived in reaction to one another - minimizing, blaming, denying, and defending ourselves against each other's emotions. Radical surgery was required to separate our emotional worlds. We weren't separate enough as individuals to enjoy genuine connection and togetherness.
