Why do people want to rush when writing novellas? Simplify your plot and expand your characters and settings, please.

So, far my favorite novella is Undercover by Jamie Lee Scott

Ok. I'm getting the style of writing : this author starts in the action and then backs up and fills in the details. The story is now working better for me.

I'm on the first of five novellas featuring a character with the same name (Valentino). The first one up is a tad confusing: I have no sense of a time period nor do I know where the story is taking place. I know the characters are driving on a bus for two weeks, heading to Nowhere, Texas, but I don't know where they are starting from.
