I'll probably be tackling this novel in a couple of months so I'm interested to hear your thoughts. I've had about 3 false starts with this novel so far. I really enjoyed it, but something about it just didn't sink in. Then an author like John Cowper Powys or Gabriel Josipovici would get dropped through my letterbox and my mind would wander...

Yeah I can see that - the start is almost deliberately unappealing, so it is easy to get turned away. I am finding I have less patience for what one could term a kind of immature romanticism - the lyrical hyperbole of alcoholism and lost love and tortured profundities - but that may also just be because I have turned into a grumpy old git
