His description of Chapter 8 is beautiful. Man is the most courageous creature seeking to explore and discover the world; to invent new things; mine for the precious jewels found in earths depths. All these require a kind of understanding, wisdom and power.

“We are a pale reflection of the wisdom of God.”

“The source of wisdom lies in the one who is all knowing, all seeing, and all powerful.”

“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps you understand what he’s doing. He’s getting the drains right, & stopping the leaks in the roof, & so on… but presently he starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably & does not seem to make sense... you thought you were going to be made into a decent little cottage; but he’s building a palace.”

Chapter 25 on God’s response to Job is excellent.

“Job is asked to consider the hippopotamus!” Ha!

“Here is a man who has lost his money, his children, his health, whose marriage is in serious trouble and his social standing at rock/bottom, and he is told to think about the hippo.”

Why God does this is the key and well worth the read.

“One of the strangest things about all that Job’s friends have said is that not once have they ever spoken to God directly. Job, on the other hand, prays…complains to God…this was part of Job’s healing process. How did Job appear so calm and ‘patient’ in his ordeal? The answer lies in his prayer life. Jacob’s struggles in prayer left him permanently lame, but they also changed him spiritually.”
