A hauntingly heartbreaking looking-glass into the juxtaposition between the Northern working class and the Southern life of leisure during Victorian England. North and South gives life and color to the calloused, dirty hands of millworkers in a rapidly industrializing society. Quite possibly my favorite of Elizabeth Gaskell’s works thus far.
