I like that Roth touches on the practice of mercy booking. While it can offer a sort of temporary relief fr those in need of “two hots and a cot”, it’s only ever a short-term solution, and can perpetuate a cycle of arrest and incarceration fr marginalised communities, leading to long-term negative consequences. It’s not at all a sustainable solution to address poverty or homelessness.
