Wouldn't even consider reading this book if it wasn't prescribed in the syllabus. It has no strategy and the characters have no personality. Basically, the author narrates the events happening in a boring South Indian household during the colonisation of India in the 1920s. If you are a feminist this is definitely not the book for you, as you'll be offended to know how women were treated like trading commodities.
