I think Japanese horror — of which I’ve sampled very little nonetheless — reads the same to me because horror is horror because it has a message and the message is the same:

In Japanese horror, there are two worlds a Matrix’ish bubble of crushing civilisation and the void of animalistic impulse. Rape, necrophilia, murder. The horror is when someone from the bubble is allowed to *see*. It’s pretty bleak
