At one point, still half-asleep, I again sensed my husband noisily opening and closing the drawers. “What are you looking for?” I asked him. The shadow turned, but in the darkness I couldn't make out its face. Barely awake, I reached out an arm—which bumped into my husband’s, who was sleeping beside me. That startled and scared me, but then I heard his voice saying, “Calm down, honey, you’re just having a nightmare."

Humankind, outraged, decided to take the ultimate revenge. Without taking into account that “it was a very prestigious library, founded in the 18th century,” and that “the very finest of Spanish society and the most distinguished of the Cuban upper crust had paraded through its reading rooms,” they blew up the building. And thus it is recorded in the most contemporary histories of this era.

When it came down to it, he thought that he wouldn’t have the courage to read the last letter. But he just had to find out what the threat was, and he hoped against all hope that somehow this would let him escape it, so in the end he did open it, where he read:

You will die tomorrow.
