Sigh. A direct train from Val d'Herens (or let's say somewhere in Valais/Wallis, seeing as they did take a Postbus up from the station) to Grindelwald is rather impossible.
You don't really realise how cumbersome the Alps are until you try to go from point A to point B anywhere in the Swiss mountains, and realise that you're 4 trains, a Postbus, and about 12 hours away from somewhere really close 'as the crow flies'!

Little Ruthli Strebel listed all 22 Swiss cantons (there's 26 now).
Just in case anyone cares, the canton of Jura was added (North border with France; mountainous: +1), Basel split into Basel Land and Basel Stadt (-1, +2), Appenzell also split (Appenzell Inner Rhoden and Appenzell Outer Rhoden: -1, +2), and so did Unterwalden, which no longer exists (-1), but which was replaced by Obwalden and Nidwalden (+2) = 26 :p

They didn't even attempt "Chäschüechli" ("a hot cheese pie"). So Zürich HB nach Luzern (Lucerne), then some stopover at an unnamed small mountain village, where the older kids get out to stretch their legs, and the two girls miss the train.
So a kindly man takes a 6 and 10 year old on his motorcycle on the highway to race down the train before the next station. Lovely illustrations - no helmets on any of them. :O

"Do you speak English?"
"Jawohl!"
The Felsenegg seilbahn! This is just south of Zürich at Adliswil, overlooking the Zürisee. :) It's June, and there are inches of snow on the ground...?! :S
So I had to choose between starting "Julia's Swiss Smuggler" (Jill Stevens), or this one. I chose this one, because the last one I read was about diamond smuggling, and I wanted a break.
Guess what this book is about?! XD
