These are the real essentials of a fighting soldier's trade,which is for fit young men only, because you can only fight if you can first live, sleep and eat like a pig, without catching pneumonia, dysentery or just dying from exhaustion. Suburban man does not take kindly to this life without acclimatization.

War has always been like this. The really exciting bits are only a small part of the whole, affect very few men & most soldiers are merely workmen, technicians and clerks. This was to be brought home to me in person.. Able to get up the battles of the Rhine & appreciate something of the immense effort of the non combatant troops that's the major part of an operation of war.
