Art history as a scholarly discipline is a modern discipline. And yet it is not so very young—older in fact than several other academic disciplines that speak to specially modern concerns, such as economics, sociology, anthropology, and psychology. In 1920, for example, there were already eighteen Ordinarien or full professors of art history in the German universities, but only one full professor of psychology.
