One key part is when Holden leaves Pencey early and goes to New York. All throughout the book, he talks about how people at Pencey are all irritating and rude. After picking a fight with Stradlater after he returns from a date and talking to Ackley, he yells and "woke up every bastard on the whole floor. Then I got the hell out." (68). This is important since the story leaves Pencey and introduces a new setting.

One interesting part was when Holden talks about Jane again, . After going to see a show with Sally, things go south, and he ends up leaving. Since he has nothing else to do, he starts thinking, and "thought maybe I might give old Jane another buzz and see if she was home yet." (175). This is interesting since he has tried to talk to/thought about Jane many times in the story. I think she will be significant later.

One funny part was how he described dancing with the girls. After going into a NYC bar to drink alcohol even though he's underage, Holden meets with three girls from Seattle named Bernice, Marty and Laverne. He dances with each, noting that Bernice is excellent, Laverne wasn't bad, but "Old Marty was like dragging the Statue of Liberty around the floor." (96). This is funny and a good way to describe annoying habits.

One surprising part was when Holden is shocked that Stradlater is going on a date with someone he knows. After being kicked out, Holden goes back to the dorm. When Stradlater, another student at Pencey says he's going on a date with a girl named Jean Gallagher, he "damn near dropped dead. 'You're damn right I know her...'" (40). This was unexpected since it suddenly introduces more of his past without warning.
