Philip the Fair, King of France, stacked the Vatican with bishops loyal to him. Then he went after the Order in an attempt to seize their lands and treasures for his own.

Several templar knights were tortured and killed by the King’s men, proving once again that the princes of the world, even if they proclaim to be Christian, are broken.

Author sketches a brief history of the Templars’ involvement in the Crusades. After they had won the Holy Land, the Christian lords and knights began squabbling amongst themselves and it all fell apart.

Nothing good can be built through force of arms and violence. These are “of the world” and are corrupted. Man is a broken creature that will seek out wealth and power. Saintly work doesn’t build empires.
