Luka meets more people that help him. On his way to the mountains, a girl has been covering his tracks,so the Nazis can't track and capture him."So you'd live.I walked behind you and covered your tracks. Those soldiers would have found you otherwise"(103).Luka put aside his humiliation for not realizing she was helping him; not his survival skils. He either has many guardian angels or they have ulterior motives.

An interesting part is when Luka is in shock for killing a soldier that was about to kill him.He had mixed feelings about surviing by murdering someone. him and that he was capable of that."I bent over and threw up on the floor"(168).He felt bad and believes his conscience will not let him forget. He tells Viktor not to tell anyone.Even though the Germans are responsible for deaths he feels guilty for killing one.

Suprising when Luk sees the couple helping him,hid him from their son, an officer in the Luka escaped from, who came to visit."Standing there with a paper bag in one hand, hugging Margarete and Helmut, was Officer Schmidt from my labor camp"(53).The parents should be loyal to the Germans who gave them a farm but instead are hiding a fugitive. Risking their lives for Luka means they don't support the harsh Germans.

It was confusing when Luka realized the German couple who caught him in their house were from the same town he was from. Instead of the couple being forced into labor camps, the Nazis gave them a farm."The Nazis gave us this farm"(26).It seems that the Nazis were treating certain people differently. So there must be somehthng special about this couple that made the Nazis spare them.Maybe they are spies for the Nazis.
