While reading New Kid, I noticed irony. Jordan is talking to Drew, one of the few black kids at his mostly white rich private school, and he realizes that Drew also gets mistaken for other black kids. During the conversation, Drew says "what's up with Mr. Rawle always calling me Deandre?"(89), so it is ironic when a white girl, then, mistakes Drew for Deandre immediately after Jordan and Drew's conversation.

In the book, Jordan's grandpa uses a metaphor. He says Joran used to love general tso and pepper steak, and that it would take him forever to choose which one to order when he could just order both. He is referring to Jordan not hanging out with Drew and Liam together. After taking his grandpa's advice and introducing the friends, Jordan realizes that "general tso and pepper steak do go well together after all."(119)
