Am I supposed to dislike the lead character? I'm not sure if the author is trying to make him seem like a gentle pacifist in love with his neighbour. Because he's actually coming across as a lazy man who shirks parts of his job he knows he should do, gets annoyed when his boss tells him to do his job, and also creepily follows his married neighbour into Waitrose ...
