I haven't read much into the history of Singapore, but what I have read always starts with Lee Kuan Yew and the expulsion from Malaysia in the 60s. This is a great first look into the history of colonial Singapore from Stamford Raffles onward and even a bit of the indigenous history from before Raffles touched down in the Singapore Straits
