"They have tormented and vexed me
Into a frantic state,
The ones with their loving affection,
The others with their hate.
They dosed my drink with venom,
They poisoned the bread I ate,
The ones with their loving affection,
The others with their hate.
But she who was my vexation
And sorrow, all others above,
She never showed me hatred,
And never showed me love."

"A single fir stands lonesome
On barren northernly height.
He drowses; frost and snowstorm
Shroud him in swathes of white.
He dreams about a palm - she,
In the orient far, alone,
Sorrowing stands and silent
At a blazing scarp of stone."

"In those days Germany was full of verse. Everyone wrote it, from school children to government ministers, even the king of Bavaria, and if possible, published it in almanacs, calendars, journals, and newspapers."

Robert Schumann set 9 Heine poems in his song cycle, Liederkreis, Op. 24. I have a recording with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Jorg Demus that I purchased back in the late 1960's. It remains my favorite recording of Schumann's lieder.

That's great that you have this recording. I like "Anfangs wollt ich fast verzagen". No. 8? I will be listening to Greenberg's Great Masters lecture on the Schumanns when I am done with Liszt which is so fascinating.

Im Wunderschönen Monat Mai, No. 1 is one of my favorites. Not long ago, I read Boman Desai's "Trio", an interesting novel based upon the relationships between the Schumanns and Brahms.
Boman Desai's "Trio" sounds interesting. Thanks! Greenberg said that Brahms feel asleep while Liszt was playing the piano (Listz's songs) but when Liszt played and interpreted one of Brahm's compositions he was thrilled and very delighted. How can one fall asleep when Liszt is playing live, I wonder.
Do you speak German? "Im Wunderschönen Monat Mai" is in this collection too:"Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,
Als alle Knospen sprangen,
Da ist in meinem Herzen
Die Liebe aufgegangen.
Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,
als alle Vögel sangen,
Da hab ich ihr gestanden
Mein Sehnen und Verlangen."

I don't speak German, but I know the poems. Schumann's music matched Heine's poetry perfectly, from the bittersweet "hearts and flowers" sentiment of "Im Wunderschönen Monat Mai" to the "storm and stress" romantic rage of "Ich grolle nicht, und wenn das Herz auch bricht".
Yes, I agree Schumann matched the poetry beautifully. This is Walter W. Arndt's translation:
"In the enchanting month of May,
When all the blossoms start,
I came to feel the burgeoning
Of love within my heart.
In the enchanting month of May,
When all the songbirds choir,
I ventured to disclose to her
My longing and desire."

A fine translation. It's a short poem, and Schumann's music indeed captured the mood and sentiment perfectly.
