Finished! My library also has Stanley Williams' book, Surviving Galeras. I briefly considered trying it, but it'd basically be hate-reading, and I should probably use my limited nonfiction attention span more wisely.

If I didn't already dislike Stanley Williams, I definitely would now.

Context: Stanley Williams was Tobias Fischer's graduate advisor.

Stanley Williams doesn't come across positively at all. I'm at the bit where he's laughing at a couple guys for wearing safety equipment for their trip to the active volcano.

"Slowly, uneasily, Calvache began to accept that, at 26 years old, she was considered Colombia's leading expert on volcanoes."

At least when I was at the start of my career and deemed "the expert" in certain things because there was literally no one else around even vaguely qualified, no one's lives were on the line.
