This was required reading in high school and I hated it. I read it a few years ago and enjoyed it. After visiting South Africa several years ago and learning more about apartheid, I decided to give it another go. Reading the foreward and introduction, I was surprised to see how Alan Paton was so influenced by Abraham Lincoln.
