The first ~40 pages were tortuous, and while the rest still has lots of issues and is occasionally annoying, the other ~50 pages weren't that bad.
But Jesus Christ, it is unfathomable to me how a story can reach the 40 page mark without having a single character with enough characterization to be even mildly interesting.

i just read the description and i still really don’t understand
So basically these British astronauts get lost in space but return to Earth an undetermined amount of time later. Society has been destroy and all people they encounter are very primitive (just imagine cavemen who are slightly more intelligent, basically). So the whole book is just about how too much technological advancement is a bad thing actually, and that deep inside, even civilized people are primitive
Or something like that, it’s all a bit confusing
