It always throws me off a little when an author randomly mentions that one character is black, for several reasons (and it's always black, there's never just a random Asian chick), but this is extra weird because I'm absolutely certain this isn't the first black character in this book. Why point it out now?

Ah my favorite foreign language trope, the speaker using English and then repeating lines in their native tongue. Because that's what multilingual people do, they use every language they know in every conversation

Why do so many books start with a woman getting a bag put over her head? :(
