H10 - the hollywood studio system (30-45): New émigré directors: hitchcock (rebecca), friz lang en otto preminger. Nwe of veranderde genres: musical: berkeley (42nd street), astaire en rogers, judy garland (wizard of oz). Screwball comedy: eccentric couples, capra (mr. Deeds goes to town). Horror: universal: browning (dracula, met lugosi), whale (frankenstein), freund (the mummy). Horror v rko's b unit; low budget

H10-the hollywood studio system (30-45): depression en woii. Warners bij de groten dr geluid. Big five en little three. Hays code ~ zelfcensuur. Verdere innovatie: symphonic score, technicolor (1st flowers and trees v disney), special effects dr optical printing, iets minder soft focus en meer deep focus. Chaplin (great dictator), john ford (stagecoach), hawks (his girl friday), orson wells (citizen kane!)

H9 – Introductie geluid. Josef von Sternberg – “The Blue Angel” (Marlene Dietrich): offscreen sound. USSR: contrapunctual use: tegenstrijdige geluiden. Hitchcock – “Blackmail” met geluidsovergangen. Japan groeit door geluid. Geluid eerst lastig voor verschillende talen, maar postproductie loste het op.

H9 – Introductie geluid. 1927: “The Jazz Singer” van Warner Bros. 1928 first all-talkie: Lights of New York. Western Electric’s system voor Big Five. Technische beperkingen  films statisch en lastig multi-camera shooting maar Lubitsch ontweek dit bv. King Vidor- “Hallelujah”: musical met enkel Afro-Amerikanen. Duitsland daagde Hollywood uit maar begroef strijdbijl. Fitz Lang – “M”: sound bridges en sonic motif.

Deel 3 – The development of sound cinema, 1926-1945. Achtergrond: Great Depression and World War II. WWII goed voor Amerikaans economie. Geluid in 1926 ingevoerd door Warner Bros, in 1929 ingeburgerd. Geluid goed voor GB, Japan en Indië. Sovjets, Nazi’s en Italianen controleerde hun filmindustrie. Franse cinema bleef aanmodderen. Politieke documentaires hip.

H8 - Surrealism: Luis Buñuel - "Un chien andalou", Dalí en Buñuel - "L'Age d'or". Cinéma Pur. The City Sympony: Walter Ruttman – “Berlin: die Symphonie der Grosstadt”. Experimental Narrative: Charles Dekeukeleire – Impatience (Belgisch!). Documentaires: Robert Flaherty – “Nanook of the North”, Viktor Turin – “Turksib".
