finally on part 2… reading such a detailed synthesis of the extreme physical and mental trauma experienced (basically universally) by women and girls throughout history has got me fucked up
I think for the overwhelming majority of readers, this text would be better in an abridged and annotated version. I wonder if a good one (not done by a man lol) exists?

“For man, there is no hiatus between public and private life: the more he asserts his grasp on the world through action and work, the more virile he looks; human and vital characteristics are merged in him; but women’s own successes are in contradiction with her femininity since the ‘real woman’ is required to make herself object, to be the Other.”
ABSOLUTELY SICKENING

(re my disagreements: despite dispelling a lot of freudian theory, her proposed revisions to his ideas are still very much a reflection of the time/society she lived in and so don’t really hold up in the modern world)(which like… thank GOD… i don’t think the fact that her arguments have lost validity as women’s rights have improved diminishes them. because like she was writing about the world she knew and By Golly She Did It Well)(man i’m really out here writing this detailed ass analysis as if ANYONE who has me on here would even Consider reading this book😭)
