"And this is how I see it today: it's not the neighborhood that's sick, it's not Naples, it's the entire Earth, it's the universe, or universes. And shrewdness means hiding and hiding from oneself the true state of things."

"'Each of us narrates our life as it suits us.'" - Lila

Very few times have I read more profound and utterly true words in a book.

"I thought of... how many who had been girls with us were no longer alive, had disappeared from the face of the earth because of illness, because their nervous systems had been unable to endure the sandpaper of torments, because their blood had been spilled."

Sandpaper of torments??? I love Elena Ferrante so much.

Jola Dear Aaron, are you rereading the whole series? Or just the first volumes? Goodreads indicates that it's reread. If it is your first encounter with Elena Ferrante's novels, I'm feeling extremely jealous that you have this wonderful experience ahead of you! If it's a reread, I'm still jealous. 😄 Speaking seriously, have a wonderful time and please, write your review ASAP. I absolutely loved the first two volumes but have a complex relationship with the rest of The Neapolitan Novels. I hope to reread the whole series someday. Anyway, I bet your review will be an absolute delight!

Aaron Hi, Jola, unfortunately it is not my first time, but I remember that being a fevered, obsessional reading experience--i couldn't put them down! I have already reread the first two, so I think I'm going to do the 3rd and 4th in a row, but we'll see if I manage. I'm interested in your complicated feelings on the last two volumes... If you have written reviews I am going to track them down :) I'll definitely post my thoughts on this when I'm done rereading!

Jola My experience was exactly the same! Difficult to compare to anything else. Unfortunately, I haven't written any reviews. Maybe the reread will inspire me to write something coherent. Looking forward to your thoughts!
