Picking up this book is beginning to appear to be a mistake.

It's proving to be surprisingly difficult to read, not because of the complexity of language, but because it's pretty high-context. It's essentially a piece of social and political commentary on the Russia of mid-1800s. You need to be familiar with that stuff and with Dostoevsky in general for this book to be an easy read.

I might drop this book midway.

Karan Gupta Very very specific terms, phrases, idioms that have particular meanings in the context of mid-1800s tsarist Russia. Coupled by the fact that so much gets lost in translation. I never not finish a book I pick up, but this might be the first one where not finishing it just now makes sense.

I'll start my Dostoevsky with some of his stylistically conventional works. Perhaps one of his earlier novels. This book, I'll probably finish a quarter just to see if things get easier to understand or not.
