what a shame that i only enjoyed this book at the end. ferrante admits that the best writers let go of their identity entirely and become something else through their writing, just as dante attempts to become the voice of a woman through his Beatrice. writing helps us become and understand the experiences of others, it is not about the individual because it is inherently a dialogue between writer and reader.

it really is so strange, some things she says i entirely relate to and feel so seen, and other things i’m sort of thinking: but haven’t a million people already said this before? like when she makes a big spectacle of the prospect that we must be inspired by other forms of media to write our own??? but of course! how could anyone even pretend otherwise? it seems so stupid to fixate upon it as if it’s a tragedy

i don’t find myself relating to most of the texts she cites, simply because she speaks of a passion and tenacity im horribly afraid i’ve never had and never will have when it comes to my writing. her fixation on the necessary other is very real to me though, i’ve often thought that you must Be a novel and emulate the act of writing, rather than taking the role of a conscious author.

I recognise myself in the writer, i think the fact that she’s a woman really really helps, i’ve never had someone express how i feel about masculine conventions within literature so clearly, as well as identifying the source of my own insecurities within writing. i do think i need to write more before i learn as much about myself as she has though.
