This is a tightly wound little book. Some of the sentences are so opaque that I had to start reading them out loud to my cat to find the rhythm and unlock their meaning. It's well worth the effort and I thought this was a 'me' problem but I'm not the only one- "A reader at Jonathan Cape, Bowen’s publisher, said that her sentences were baffling until you understood the emphasis and then everything clicked into place."
