One moment that really got me emotionally invested was when Louie raced against Don lash in the Olympic qualifiers. The author really did a good job describing Don Lash, building up the suspension. "Looking at the bobbing head of the mighty Don Lash, Louie felt intimidated,"(26). It really showed what kind of opponent Louie was up against, and it even intimidated me a little, well... almost.

Louie has gained even more respect from me thanks to this one moment. Its when he was ordered to betray his country in a broadcast message by criticizing America."..make his life in camp unbearable so he'd be willing to betray his country...He refused"(191) This really shows Louie's loyalty to his country, even though he could be tortured if he refuses, he still says no.He wont betray his country, no matter what.

One scene that had me disturbed was how descriptive the author was when Phil's head was bleeding. The author really goes in depth to a bone-chilling level."Blood spouted in arcs from Phil's head and streamed down his face,"(103) Hillenbrand really makes it easy to visualize how graphic the sight is, with no censorship, staying true to the depressing WW2 theme.

One moment that really had me shook was when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. The author was really able to convey the gruesomeness of the event by using the right numerical facts and vocabulary. "In less than 2 hours...Japan mauled America's navy and killed more than 2,400 people,"(49). It was, unfortunately, a bloodbath, and the author does a great job sugarcoating none of it, staying true to the source material.
