will be taking a break from this book for now :) for now i'd give this book a solid 5/5. it's super duper insightful but takes a huge chunk of time like i'd take 2 hours for 13 pages lol

ended at systems theory. such an insightful perspective and will definitely stick with me as i solidify my own viewpoints.

journeying with this book was like no other. truly so grateful i picked it up when i did and see u soon :>

i haven't read socio in 10 days.. heresy /j

i finished ethnomethodology! i like how it touched on everyday life, and it's super micro-extremist with how intricate the interactions they study are. ik conversational analysis has diff roots from the prior but they fall under the same category so my comments are the same for it as well. this topic made my brain go fuzzy but i'm happy i managed to finish it :))

i finished lunch 24 hrs later! lollables

symbolic interactionism is such an interesting theory, it's unfortunate that it now lacks clear boundaries of where it starts and ends due to theorists' excessive amount of theoretical synthesizing and addressing of its issues. some concepts i was captivated by was goffman's analogy of dramaturgy, role distance, stigma and framework! truly such a cool chapter hehe :)

lol i got so sentimental over taking a break then i went back to the book again.. why am i so unserious oml

anyways symbolic interactionism! loved the snippets of philosophy, how the theory defines actors as not only passive subjects but as individuals, meanings and symbols (as well as the role they play in communication), mind and self and lastly, how society serves both to constrain and enable.

12 more pages!

general systems theory turned my brain into mush with how dense the language was, it was TOO HARD to comprehend.

luhmann was so much better. i loved how he tackled complexity between an environment and a system, as well as contingency within interaction :) some of my favs would be double contingency and evolution tho and i'm in the middle of differentiation which looks promising as of now!

finally finished chapter 8 which took me way too long

i definitely support radical democracy as compared to communism though like one sociologist made such a valid point of how communism and even socialism have failed when legitimized and systemized. maybe in a sense, i resonate more with post-marxism bc marx's ideals will always have a place within society, magnitude differs based on the epoch :)

the way i'm reading this slow is so painful

historically oriented marxism was great!! loved the focus on several epochs that led to the rise of capitalism eg. industrial revo, french revo, expansion etc. i loved the new perspective it gave.

i have not yet completed spatial analysis but honestly, it had to be one of the most idiosyncratic theories ever. it makes sm sense but at the end of the day, it's space lol

finished neo-marxian economic sociology!

1.) i don't see how the "manager" is the pivotal figure in modern capitalism as they are still controlled by those above them.
2.) i don't see how workers consent to working hard.. maybe use a better term? (fails to account for the destitute)
3.) fordism is still very much present so idt a shift in post-fordism would be the best phrasing for it.

after scrutinizing critical theory's roots and foundations (an pessimistic one at that), i've reached the end!

they tackle variations made afterwards that expound and attempt to address the original theory's waterloos :)

i like honneth's focus on emancipation and how there's still hope for the masses to liberate themselves from the elite's power hold. i question his recognition theory tho but he got the job done!

i'm getting through this book kinda slow, my bad.

CURRENT: neo-marxian theory and its variations, from econ determinism to hegelian and critical!

- love the transition and shift in focus, from fatalism to social action.
- critical theory embodies me because it raises such PROFOUND points but lacks specific courses of action... critique of culture was my fav as it resonates with feats hehe

that's all!
