He had already set a pattern of wanting her when he returned from the slaughterhouse in the morning. The only question was how often. During the “honeymoon” period she had been forced to endure her man nearly every other day. Occasionally, the intervals were even shorter and he might want her several times in a single day. Always he would reach for her when she was least prepared.....he simply didn't care.

Praj It’s funny how marital rape is easily dismissed as some sort of preposterous prerogative of the husband. Dare the raped wife revolt against her rapist (husband), the entire judicial system come pouncing on her. Ain’t that some fucking shit!

Jibran It's funnier when this is dismissed on technical grounds, 'how can a husband rape his own wife?', thus negating the woman's right to consent at its roots.

Very glad you're reading this one, Praj. I recently acquired a copy, so you may inspire me to follow (along with Enchi and everyone else...).

Praj @ Jibran :- I know right! The audacity of treating a "vagina" as some kind of marital dowry.

@ Aubrey :- If I review this one, the post will be brimming with angst and then some.

I wouldn't want to meet you immediately after you finish it. As a male, it can be injurious to my health... ;)

Seriously, casual assertion of male superiority totally pisses me off, too.

Haha! No worries, NK. I usually do not pen a review (if I write one) immediately after the last read page. It just too much of artillery of imagery swirling inside my mind. Ha!

However, on a serious note, I agree about the inbred male superiority. There is this VOGUE Empowerment advertise that frequents the airing time - "Boys Don't Cry!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Nj99...

What is more shameful is that even in the 21st century, we need to "educate" men to not abuse women. Utterly disgusting!

We "educate" women through ads that they have to be fair, beautiful and use good make-up to go up in life. Once they are mature, they become "housewives" (even if employed) and are in charge of the kitchen, the toilets and even pleasing the mother-in-law.

Ads are the most vulgar items on our TV, I feel.

NK, irrespective to the gradations of vanity displayed in the media and absorbed in general environment, irrespective whether an employed woman is seen through the lens of claustrophobic domesticity, NO MAN HAS THE RIGHT TO BEAT/ABUSE A WOMAN! Ads may be vulgar and at times condemning, but abuse of a woman in the hands of a man has been incidental since the time a man was born with a penis.

I agree! No need for the caps. I was in no way defending the abuse of women by men. I was just pointing out how the image of the woman as an object of lust before marriage and as a willing slave afterwards subtly reinforces the narrative of male dominance. Our media are full of it.

Haha!! you gotta cut me some slack, NK! When it comes to the whirlwind of my "species" I do tend to get a bit passionate. And, I agree the Indian media panorama, more so the movies are majorly responsible for some salient features of patriarchal dominance.

I understand your passion, but I am not the correct target for your anger. I'm on your side.

BTW, if a woman is happy in filling her traditional gender role, and her man agrees to it, can that be called enforcing traditional values? If so, I'm guilty of it. My wife stays at home and does the cooking and cleaning (though she is also a special educator, working from home).

Praj First of all I was not at all angry with you or your words. It would be utterly preposterous for me to adhere to such frivolity. I was just making my point in a stern way.

As for, a woman choosing to be a housewife, a career woman or even multitasking both of her domestic and professional world is solely her prerogative. That has nothing to do with being 'Abuse'. it an entire new tangent. In and outs of feminism has got nothing to do with the act of violence.

Yeah. West-centric feminist narrative of the 60s and 70s made things difficult for Eastern women who wanted to stay home without feeling oppressed. But I digress. The issue here is abuse of womankind at the hands of assuming men.

Nandakishore Mridula Jibran and Praj, I think we are spot on in discussing this, because abuse has a lot to do with gender roles. It's the concept of the wife as the "property" of her husband which is at the root of domestic abuse - only, it's at the extreme end of the spectrum.

I was navigating the comment thread for that Vogue Empower video on youtube and a comment from a grammatically challenged, irate meninist which very eloquently says 'Feminism is bullshit' has 26 likes. I weep for humanity.
