1923 - Hannah asks Eva if she loved her children at one point. Hannah catches fire and dies as Sula looks on.

1922 - the summer Nel and Sula are 12. They bloom. They attend a funeral of a young boy.

1921 - we meet Eva and her family. Sula is Eva’s granddaughter.

1920 - Helene is introduced who then gives birth to Nel. They take the train down south to Helene’s grandmother’s funeral. Nel meets her grandmother Rochelle. Clearly, Helene and Rochelle have a strained relationship. Sula is briefly introduced as Nel’s friend who’s house she loves going to.

1919 - Shadrack is introduced to us. He fought in the war in 1917. After witnessing the death of a fellow soldier it seems he has gone mad and is dealing with PTSD. Eventually he is released from the hospital and wanders around town. He creates National Suicide Day and it becomes he fabric of Medallion.
