What an exciting climax! At first, I wondered if it was realistic for someone in an abusive situation, with learned helplessness since age nine, to be so brave, so strong, but then I remembered he did have unconditional positive regard/love from 0-nine, AND... another Bruce Perry thought: "it is often when wandering through the emotional carnage left by the worst of mankind that we find the best of humanity as well."

Ah, awareness and sometimes painful decisions only mean we're awake, growing, and alive.

This pwrful scene remnds me of what I read in Boy Who Was Raised As a Dog: yanno the fight or flight response, eh? there is a 3rd option for a human brain: when incapable of those two, disassociate. Found in children (no schema), in females more than males, and in ppl with learned helplessness; they remove their minds from a sit., make themselves small, cry/try to get the attn of someone stronger, hope for a miracle.
