I've read a lot of books in my lifetime, including some Charles Dickens, but Angela's Ashes gives us a glimpse of how poverty, neglect, abuse, and alcoholism can create an absolute nightmare of a childhood. I'll never complain of my own childhood again, though it was worse than most.

I finished reading this wonderful memoir three or four days ago, and like most great stories, I can't get it out of my head. It's an old book that I started many years ago when it was first published, but for reasons I can't remember now set it aside after the first few pages. Like many avid readers, I suffered an abusive childhood, but nothing can compare to Frank McCourt's. I won't complain of my own again. j
