In the book, the author uses figurative language to allow the reader to picture what Hannah is thinking. Furthermore, the simile in the sentence "The sound of her own voice drowned out the steady drone of the tires on the endless twisting road."(72) shows that when Hannah started to sing, her fear of the brutal scenes of the Holocaust started to fade out of her mind, and she used singing as a method of coping.

During a conversation with Hannah, Shmuel says "Being married does not bother me. But getting married-that frightens me!" Hannah didn't understand the point he was making. However, I find this quote very relatable. In my situation, marriage is not the case, yet I constantly find myself worrying about decisions; it is not the outcome that worries me but the big step that I have to take is what gives me anxiety.

While reading, I came across figurative language in the book. When the pictures of the Nazi Concentration camps were being described, the author said "corpses stacked like cordwood."(8) This simile means that there were many dead victims because they had to be stacked on top of each other. Furthermore, this comparison between corpses and cordwood was used to help the reader portray the haunting photos in their mind.
