“Maybe he wasn’t taking kill shots. Maybe he just wanted to scare off the driver.” “Or maybe she saw something, and they’re trying to eliminate her.” Colin didn’t like the idea, but knew it was possible. Right before her “accident,” Holly had spent half an hour at Mae’s Truck Stop, which was across the street from the site of the handoff that never happened. Maybe she had seen something, and just didn’t realize it.

“Holly, stay down!” Colin steadied his arms on the hood of his truck and took aim at the shooter’s hide. He nailed the tree, but the bullet didn’t penetrate. A flash of muzzle fire to the left. Shit, he’d moved. Colin lined up another shot and hoped to hell Holly would stay low. Bang. Another hail of gunfire, and Colin knew his truck was quickly turning to Swiss cheese.

It had never occurred to her that drug cartels had their tentacles this far north. And now, she was being targeted by one, or someone working for one, because of something she’d stumbled into purely by accident. Her mountain of unpaid bills was starting to seem like the very least of her problems. “Don’t worry,” Colin said, giving her a thoughtful glance.

“Look at me.” She did. His irises were nearly black and she could see the fire reflected in them. The moment stretched out. Holly’s chest tightened and her heart started to thud. His gaze shifted to her cut. “You could probably use a few stitches. I’m not equipped to do it here, but I could run you to Bozeman.” She just stared at him.

Metal crunched. A giant wall of branches came at her and her head whipped forward—thunk!—into the steering wheel. Seconds or minutes ticked by. She opened her eyes to find herself surrounded by a dark cocoon of foliage. The van was eerily silent. She tasted something warm and coppery. She touched her finger to her lip and looked around dazedly.

“She’s a florist up here doing a wedding,” Colin said, growing increasingly worried as he considered the problem. Holly had reported the shooting last night, which meant the sheriff’s office knew exactly who she was, right down to her home address. She wasn’t safe in Bozeman—not if Ice Man and the sheriff were one and the same.

She’d brought a few dozen extra stems, and as she scrutinized the pink, yellow, and orange blossoms—sunset colors, per the bride’s request—she knew she was going to need every last one of them. Holly took a deep breath and tipped her head back. This is the day you will save your business, she told herself. She hoped it was true. She’d chanted the same mantra yesterday and barely escaped with her life.

She held her hands near the flame and closed her eyes as tingly warmth seeped into her toes and fingers. Even her nose stung. God, she’d thought she’d never get warm again, and the feeling of heat on her face now brought tears to her eyes. What is wrong with me? She never cried. But something about the events of the past hour had her emotions bubbling to the surface. Someone tried to kill me.

She tasted something warm and coppery. She touched her finger to her lip and looked around dazedly. The silence was drowned out by a roaring in her head as she processed what had happened. She’d careened off the road. She’d wrecked the company van. And not only that—she’d wrecked it on a seldom-used road just before dusk on an evening when every weatherman in the state of Montana was predicting snow.
