It was surprising when Yanek and other Jews were sent to the showers expecting to die. But instead water came out."Freezing water so cold it made me scream"(129).Yanek heard stories of the Nazis killing Jews by gassing them at the showers so being spared by the Nazis shocked him. Sparing Jews one day and killing the next showed the Jews that they had no control of their lives and are at the mercy of their sick game.

A suspicious part of the book is when Yanek gives his uncle the money he found. Even though his uncle uses the money to buy bread from the people outside the camp, he does not tell Yanek where he hides the rest of the money. Unfortunately, his uncle was killed. "I've hidden the rest to keep it safe"(81) Was his uncles keeping the money secret to protect Yanek if he is forced to tell or does he not trust Yanek?

It is distubing how Nazis, like Goeth, acted each day to follow Hitler's unlawful and horrific rules. "Amon Goeth wouldn't have his breakfast each day until he'd killed at least one Jew"(72). I can't imagine thinking I would be a target if I decided to work slower or take a break. Also can't imagine taking someone's life for no reason other than their religion and following thinking it was fun or necessary.

I can relate to when Yanek said how he wished he did more in life. Reading this showed me that there are things we cannot control, like death."If I had known what the next six years of my life were going to be like, I would have eaten more, told my family I loved them more"(1). Life is short and you need to take advantage of every moment. and at any moment it can be over.
