Q63. Reading is our favorite hobby, but what is your 2nd favorite? What do you do to relax when you aren't reading? Movies? Cooking? Stamp-collecting (that's going to die out). Mine is gardening. Because I live in a rainforest I have to have pots as the vines & baby trees are rampant & take over everything. I listen to books as I garden though! I also like walking, in the evenings when it's cool, listening to a book.

Nicole I love baking! Though I haven’t done much of it recently because we have a new oven thanks to moving into a house and it’s a little testy.

message 2: by Luís (new)

Luís My second hobby is watching movies. I love that!

message 3: by Dorota (new)

Dorota Winch Playing computer games or hiking… not sure which one I like more! I guess it depends on the weather 😉

Do you bake from cookbooks are are they tried and true recipes? Do you decorate as well? I wish wish wish I could bake!

message 5: by Kelani (new)

Kelani I'm currently on a journey to watch all of the Marvel TV shows/movies in chronological order. I'm only 5 movies in so I have quite the task ahead of me lol

Cecily It's possible to have extra hobbies on top of books, reading, and reviewing?! Who knew? 😉
I'd better think of one....

message 9: by Debbie Y (new)

Debbie Y Actually, reading isn’t my 1st favorite :) my first love is drawing and photography which is a hobby but also what I do as a profession, after reading I love hiking, working out, watching movies, baking, I love attending my plants, too! It’s so cool you live in a rainforest, wow.

message 10: by Linda (new)

Linda I love walking in the woods and taking photographs of cool plants, critters, and birds.

message 11: by Mike (new)

Mike pre lockdown I went to a lot of local auctions. Think very bottom feeder American Picker. The people at auctions like this make an interesting coulture, and it is a interesting way to see stuff you never saw before. i made my best money on dinnerware. I'm still trying to understand one set of dishes I pieced out. that went to any different people in South Korea. I bought the dishes in different box lots that had some small pieces of pyrex. Otherwise I would not have given them a 2nd look. Sometimes it is good to be lucky

message 12: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra I love to bake, I find it relaxing :) Gardening is also fun - I don't have a garden as such... It's just a tiny piece of ground with a Tibetan cherry tree, a couple of philadelphus bushes, and two lovely clematis plants. I also have a smallish terrace that I fill with pots. And there are movies, series, and anime :))) I do prefer books to all of the above, though.

message 13: by Arupratan (last edited May 24, 2023 11:00AM) (new)

Arupratan I love trekking, hiking, mountaineering and rock-climbing. But I wouldn't (and shouldn't) count these activities as my "regular" hobbies. Much as I'd like to do, I cannot engage myself in these things on a daily basis (due to my other professional involvements). In that case, I'll regard running as my second favorite hobby. I run pretty much regularly and enjoy doing it.
Oh, and I love cooking whenever I get a chance (or feel in the mood for).

Do you watch movies and then get the book (if there is one)? Or read a book and then watch the movie (ditto)? If you do either, generally how do they compare?

I watch movies and always, when viewed them, after a long time, I read the books.

What sort of hiking? Mountains? Do you listen to audiobooks at the same time?

message 18: by Angela (new)

Angela I love my indoor pot plants and have waaaaay too many. But always seem to have room for one more! I also love taking my daughters dogs out for walks - I'm not sure who loves it more - them or me.

Matal “The Mischling Princess” Baker Gardening and quilting!

message 25: by Colin (new)

Colin Baldwin Great question, Petra.
When I can drag myself away from books and Goodreads(!), I get into my violin playing/practice and movies. Gardening is always beckoning but often has to wait.
Cheers from CB

message 26: by 7jane (new)

7jane Listening to music, though with less intensity than I used to. I listen to classical radio sometimes while reading, or pick something from my collection to listen to :)

That's wonderful to have a profession that is also your favourite thing to do. I used to think of having an indie bookshop as that, but then Amazon and Kindle came along and I can't earn a living any more.

Mimia The Reader I really like hand sewing and sometimes embroidering. It's great because they're hobbies that can be done while listening to an audiobook.

message 33: by Petra X (new)

Petra X Linda wrote: "I love walking in the woods and taking photographs of cool plants, critters, and birds."

Do you post them anywhere? I used to like doing the same as you but it isn't possible to actually walk in the rainforest (well cloudforest really) at least not without big boots, and a machete which is all a bit awkward.

jrendocrine at least reading is good lot of sewers here, me too - and I lift weights. (And go to work...)

I probably have a lot of pot plants in my garden you have indoors, being as I'm in the tropics. I was amazed when I first came here and found my mother's indoor plants were common, some wild, some even weeds, here.

Film photography, drawing/sketching (but now it's mainly for work) and hiking.

The temperature every day is 74-78, it is high on a mountain. It might go down to 69 for a few nights a year. It's nice and breezy from the trade winds so great climate. Hotter on the beaches about 10 mins away.

message 41: by Alan (new)

Alan I play a little guitar, and do like to take photographs, though I don't think I'm more than better-than-average at either. Just a couple of ways to keep my fingers away from the keyboard...

Wulf Krueger I know I'm late to the party but I love tinkering with Linux. I have been using Linux as my primary operating system for 28 years and have been working on Linux distributions for 17 years.

I also dabble in all free and open-source software. For me, nothing beats the feeling of finding an annoying bug in a software, being able to fix it *and* contribute it back! It's so empowering and satisfying.

I'm not otherwise a creative person but I know for a fact that I've really made a tangible difference in the lives of real people and it feels like that counts against the wrongs I've undoubtedly done towards other real people. :)

I think I am the last person in the world not to have listened to a podcast, although before Covid I actually tested for doing them. I don't know how to get them to keep my attention like a book.
